Preserving Sanbornton's History For The Future

Our Mission:

To gather and digitize the historical and contemporaneous documents of the Sanbornton, New Hampshire, community.

The Town of Sanbornton

First known as Crotchtown, due to its position in the fork of the Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee Rivers, Sanbornton was granted in 1748 to John Sanborn and 59 others, most of who were residents of Stratham, Exeter, and Hampton. Twelve of the grantees were named Sanborn, hence the name of the grant. On January 8, 1770, a committee was appointed to present a petition for incorporation. It was made on March 1, 1770 and Sanbornton was incorporated the same day. Under the terms of the act of incorporation, the first town meeting was to be held within 70 days after the date of its passage. However, the first one of which there is any authentic record occurred March 26, 1771, at the home of Daniel Sanborn in Sanbornton.

2008 Update We had a good response from our Annual Appeal for 2008, however it fell short of the financial support to continue to preserve and make accessible the historical documents of Sanbornton anytime by anyone on the internet. We need to raise another $5,000 for General Operating funds for 2008. Donations are tax deductible. We also hope to raise additional funds for particular projects:Our Endowment Fund, the Public Collection, Particular Documents–Marriages, Births & Deaths 1800’s, Early Town Meetings 1760-1899, Photographs, Cemeteries. Send an email making your pledge today! We are pleased to announce we have received a grant from the Lakes Region Charitable Foundation to redesign our Public Collection and Digital Library to better handle the significant number of digital files we have in our archives.
